After the collapse of the Soviet :union:, Russia faced significant geopolitical, geostrategic, and geoeconomic challenges that had a profound impact on its regional and global standing. The dissolution of the :union: resulted in a diminished influence for Russia, prompting Western countries to devise strategies aimed at curbing Russia's resurgence by exerting influence in its immediate neighborhood. In response, Russia strategically orchestrated its involvement in the crises in Ukraine and Syria as a means to coerce the United States into engaging in new negotiations concerning the future global order.
To comprehensively analyze the long-term factors driving Russia's intervention in the Ukrainian and Syrian conflicts, this article employs rational choice theory alongside descriptive, analytical, and library-based methods. The central question underpinning this analysis revolves around understanding the motivations behind Russia's protracted engagement in these crises. By employing rational choice theory, it becomes evident that the Russian Federation seeks to secure a prominent geopolitical position and assert itself as a global power within the future global order through its active participation in both the Syrian and Ukrainian conflicts.
